Review of "Too Hot To Handel" with the Grand Rapids Symphony.....

REVIEW EXCERPT: "Symphony with Soul" brings crowd to feet with contemporary twist on Handel's "Messiah"

By Jeffrey Kaczmarczyk... The GR Press. February 28, 2010

Mezzo soprano Vaneese Thomas performs with the Grand Rapids Symphony in their Too Hot to Handel performance Saturday night at the DeVos Place.

When George Frideric Handel composed his famous "Hallelujah" Chorus, he claimed afterward that, as he wrote, "I thought I saw the face of God."

Were he on hand Saturday evening in DeVos Performance Hall, Handel might have added that he heard the voice, too.

Because the capstone to "Too Hot to Handel," a contemporary twist on Handel’s oratorio "Messiah," was big and loud and had an audience of 1,477 on its feet and clapping to the music.

The Grand Rapids Symphony's ninth annual "Symphony with Soul" concert featured the orchestra, guest soloists and the Grand Rapids Symphony Community Chorus in a rollicking, updated version of Handel's 268-year-old oratorio.

The Grand Rapids Symphony "Symphony with Soul" concert was inaugurated by music director David Lockington to break down cultural barriers. "Too Hot to Handel" certainly does that.

Folks, This is a picture of the great conductor and musician Duane Davis. He conducted The Grand Rapids Symphony's first production of "Too Hot To Handel" this past weekend(Feb. 27). It was a smashing success! Please look for upcoming productions in 2010 of this work arranged by Bob Christianson and conducted by Marin Alsop.
